  • A valuable chronology of the major events, personalities and actions that decided the course of WWII, which helped to shape the world we live in today.

This 2DVD series will provide a clear and factual account of the causes, course and consequences of World War II. It will assess the contribution of particular leaders, such as Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt, Mussolini and Stalin. From the Nazi seizure and consolidation of power, the beginnings of the systematic repression and persecution that came to characterise Hitler’s regime, the period of rearmament and the early territorial expansion in Austria and Czechoslovakia that served as a prelude to the later wars of conquest.

From the outbreak of war to the defeat of France, the first blitzkrieg against Poland in which the awesome power of the German war machine was first unveiled to the world, the attack on Denmark and Norway in which airborne forces were used for the first time in history, and the invasion of France in which massed panzer divisions slicing through the Ardennes delivered one of the most dramatic Coups de Gras in the annals of warfare. The period between the defeat of France and the climactic Battle of Stalingrad in the winter of 1942. The isolation and Britain in 1940, the war at sea and the intervention of America, the war in North Africa and the Balkans, as well as Hitler’s ultimately ill-fated invasion of Russia. Focusing on the major events of this period; the Battle of Britain, the battles of Malta, Tobruk and El Alamein, the siege of Leningrad, the Winter War in Russia and Hitler’s desperate drive into the Caucasus and across the Don Steppe that would lead inexorably to Stalingrad and to defeat in the East.

From 1944, the final terrible year of the war, the Allied advances on three fronts, the airwar against Germany, the gradual destruction of the German army, and the last ditch defence of Berlin by scratch formations of SS and Hitler Youth. Concluding with the liberation of the concentration camps, the arrest and trial for war crimes of the surviving Nazi leaders and an assessment of the casualties and costs of the conflict.
